ABOUT AMY
Education:
University of Texas at Austin (Biology, B.S.; Minor in UTeach)
Counseling Experience:
Amy interned at Breakthrough Austin, a nonprofit organization that helps first-generation students go to college, during her college career. She helped middle school students apply for private schools and magnet schools in the Austin area by editing essays and educating families about different financial opportunities.
Counseling Philosophy:
"It can be really daunting to write a resume and essay, apply for financial aid, ask for recommendation letters, and meet deadlines while juggling responsibilities at home and school. I'm excited to work with students to not only help complete online applications but with making sure that students feels comfortable and that he or she stands out among the thousand candidates who apply."
Teaching Experience:
Amy graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and minor in UTeach. After graduating, she taught Biology for a semester at Pflugerville High before moving to Austin ISD. She is currently teaching Aquatic Science, on Biology and AP Biology level at McCallum High School. On top of her regular class load, she helps and tutors students in after school programs and prepares them for the STAAR.
Educational Philosophy:
"Learning is about making connections. I think to be an effective teacher you have to first establish a relationship with a student. Once established, you can tailor concepts and ideas according to each student and make them relevant to their everyday life."
Interesting Fact:
Amy enjoys binge watching crime shows like Forensic Files, American Crime, & Drugs Inc., while she draws and paints portraits.
